But… Lincoln really didn’t like African Americans.

He shared the popular Northern opinion that blacks were not societal equals, and believed they wouldn’t be able to live in harmony with the whites. 

He freed the slaves as a war measure to cripple the South; he didn’t want to. It became a necessity later in the Civil War as he saw it.
